2016-2017 President's Message
Welcome to the Junior League of Orange County, California (JLOCC).
Our community has changed greatly since 1956, when the Newport Harbor Service League formed with
a purpose of training members for effective volunteer services. We joined the Association of Junior
Leagues (1971) and changed our name to reflect our growing membership (1985).
The number of non-profits in the Orange County area has grown exponentially in our 60 years. Many of
these non-profits are the evolution of JLOCC projects or ideas, or are led by past and present JLOCC
members. Our vision and leadership is wide reaching.
As we continue to find a meaningful place in the Orange County landscape, we are reframing our focus
from “project-driven” to “issue-driven” – seeking to broaden the impact we make in our community.
Our challenge is to continue to stay relevant in the complex puzzle that is Orange County. By perceiving
gaps then recommending and supporting solutions, we can multiply the impact of agencies with which
we partner. After significant conversations with members and our community about the highest areas
of need in our area, and how we can respond to these needs within the context of larger strategic plan,
the JLOCC has committed to focusing on foster youth and human trafficking.
Our league has been strong and successful for 60 years because of the contributions of each individual
member – time, talent, and treasures. The JLOCC develops and fosters an environment that values each
woman’s individual capacity for volunteer commitments and respects our time by making events
valuable and meaningful.
We all have different ways to give to the JLOCC. As an organization we welcome all women who value
our Mission. We are committed to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organization, and
I joined the Junior League years ago and miles away. I joined for friendship, skill-building, and
meaningful activities. Having women with similar values, but different views, has broadened my life.
The leadership opportunities continue to challenge me to grow as an individual and professional.
I could cite statistics and statements about the JLOCC’s impact in the community and to its members;
however, the true impact is in each individual life that is changed and improved through our action. I
remain a member both because I value seeing this positive impact in others, and because I have seen
this change in myself.
I am honored to have been selected to serve as the JLOCC President. I encourage you to learn more
about membership, our events, and how you can contribute to our league. Our journey to create
positive change is just beginning. Join us as we engage our membership through effective community
